Great news!! There's a new track in the state and there will be Car Club Challenge in Spokane!

I just got off the phone with the manager of the new Spokane Motorsports Park, Jay Livingston, and he has agreed to host CCC next season. Most of you will remember Jay from Pacific and Woodburn. Now - lots of work to do.....

NEWS RELEASE from Spokane County
Posted in December 17th, 2008

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Spokane County Reaches 25-Year Agreement with Austin Motorsports Management, LLC to Operate Race Track
SPOKANE, December 16, 2008 – This afternoon, the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) signed a 25-year agreement with Austin Motorsports Management, LLC to operate the Spokane County Motorsports Park on the West Plains. According to Austin’s business plan, the agreement will bring an estimated $40 million in projected revenues to Spokane County. By signing the agreement today, the BOCC achieved several goals for the race track: increase tourism, provide a location for street racers to compete safely, create new recreational opportunities for residents, and pay for the acquisition of the property and improvements at the site.

Austin Motorsports Management, LLC is owned by Bucky Austin, a successful businessman who has been involved with racing for a number of years and operates a chain of auto repair shops in Western Washington. Austin is expected to sign the agreement by the end of the year.

According to the terms of the agreement, Spokane County will receive a base rental fee of $10,000 a month for the first five years, along with $2.00 from every admission ticket. Effective in year six (2014), the base rental fee will increase by 2% annually over the remaining life of the agreement. The County’s share of the front gate receipts will also increase. For example, during the first year of operation the County will receive $2.00 for every admission ticket that is sold…with a guaranteed minimum of $150,000. In 2010, the guaranteed minimum will increase to $200,000, and in years 3-5 (2011-2013), the guaranteed minimum increases again to $250,000. With a combination of the base rental fee, front gate receipts and admissions tax funds pledged by the City of Airway Heights, officials are confident that over the life of the agreement, the County will more than cover the costs associated with acquiring and improving the track.

In addition, the agreement stipulates that the operator will invest a minimum of $2,000,000 in improvements. Plans are already in place to bring national-level events to the track. The agreement also provides a 25-year renewal option for the operator.

Don,
After reading this it sounds like its minimum yearly cost is going to be very high, going higher after several years. How can they sustain that level of income to make this last in these tough economic times?

I talked to Jay about that and Bucky is the one on the hook for the $$$ if they can't make it through the gate. It sounds like they (Bucky and Jay) are pretty comfortable with their commitment.

He also said the they will hold weekend events to make it attractive for us west side racers to come over and race Saturday PM and stay for a Sunday race and still make it home Sunday night. More racers = more $$.

Are you acting as an advisor for starting a CCC association in Spokane?

I don't think we have many members that want to trailer race cars for 6 hours each way to do what we can already do locally.

Hey Don, I say we round up some racers and go to the "east side" and go beat up on some of the locals there and leave a mark. I don't think Jason wouldn't mind making a road trip there. Hell we've been racing at places alot farther than 6 hours before. We could use "seat time" anyways. Keep us posted on when the trip is planned!

Spokane has posted their 2009 schedule and we are on it!!

see http://www.spokanecountyraceway.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/drag-racing-flyer.pdf foir details.

We will have a full Saturday at the track to ourselves! Well us and the Spokane Pro Gas folks too. It should be a blast and a great opportunity to kick things off for next year.

I just wanted to make clear - this is NOT a regular CCCA points event. No one is expected to travel over there to earn points. We may put it on our schedule, but with a note that it's a non-points event.

It will however be a blast! I have a friend that lives in Coeur d'Alene that used to race CCC years ago for the Mopar club. He will spend this year recruiting clubs to race at the September event and to race in a 2010 full program.

I plan to be there and hope that I can drag along some of you with me.

Don
